Today’s Random Player From The Baseball Project That May Or May Not Amount To Anything is Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett. Hartnett was once at Wrigley Field when a fan called him over and asked him for an autograph for his nephew. Hartnett obliged and it was photographed by a photographer of one of the local newspapers. Commissioner Landis caught wind of this and was none too happy. It turns out that the fan happened to be Al Capone. The memories of the Black Sox scandal was still relatively fresh in many minds, having only happened about 10 years earlier. Landis sent for Hartnett and told Gabby that was to never be seen in Capone’s presence ever again. Hartnett replied that if that was the Commissioner’s decision he was fine with it, but “I’m not going to tell him that. You tell him that.”
