Today’s Random Player From The Baseball Project That May Or May Not Amount To Anything is Mark Fidrych. He was known as “The Bird”, he came on the scene talking to baseballs and jumping baselines and somehow getting people out.(his ERA was nearly a full run lower than his FIP) while winning the Rookie of the Year Award, finishing second in the AL Cy Young voting in 1976, and landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated with Big Bird (as far as I know Big Bird and Hulk Hogan are the only Sesame Street character and pro wrestler ever to appear on the cover of SI). Unfortunately his low strikeout rate came back to haunt him along with injuries as he only managed 162 more innings for the rest of his major league career. In April of 2009 he was working on a dump truck on his farm just north of Boston when it collapsed, killing him at the young age of 54. He was like a comet – he streaked through the night and flamed out before we knew it. Sports are great when characters are a big part of the genre, and he was an original.
