Today’s Random Player From The Baseball Project That May Or May Not Amount To Anything is Willie Hernandez. Hernandez was a reliever with Cubs before being traded to the eventual NL Champion Phillies in 1983. Just 10 days before the start of the 1984 season he was traded with Dave Bergman to the Tigers for Glenn Wilson and John Wockenfuss (just a great name). On April 6 he recorded his first save of the season. He ended up 32 for 33 in save opportunities (he had 27 career saves entering the season), and 21 of those saves were multiple innings. He recorded three more saves in the postseason as the Tigers won their first World Series in 16 years (and haven’t won one since). In the offseason Hernandez picked up both the AL Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award. He remains one of only three relievers to win both awards in the same season (Fingers and Eckersley are the other two).
